About This Game A serial killer is terrorizing the streets of Victorian London, and private investigator Sydney Emerson has hit a new low between finding lost dogs and receiving alleyway beatings. A turn of events sees Sydney forgoing his selfish nature and thrusting himself into perilous and increasingly surreal situations, treading a fine line between dreams and reality. Explore the foggy streets of Victorian London in all its decadence and depravity, searching the slums, taverns, brothels and even Sydney’s abstract dreamscapes for clues, while meeting a host of interesting, insane and eccentrically British characters along the way.Features•A noir adventure laced with adult themes and dark humour.•A faithful recreation of Victorian London, from decadence to depravity.•Classic point and click gameplay in the vein of the LucasArts games of yore.•Explore Sydney’s surreal dream-world for clues.•Follow the trail of a killer, or drink until you vomit at the pub.•Original soundtrack blends film noir and traditional Victorian instruments. 7aa9394dea Title: The Slaughter: Act OneGenre: Adventure, IndieDeveloper:BrainchildPublisher:BrainchildRelease Date: 28 Jan, 2016 The Slaughter: Act One Free Offline Need a screwdriver. Go to pub. Special is cocktails. Order screwdriver. Get drink + actual screwdriver. Screwdriver is too flimsy. The fix? Put it in varnish! OF COURSE! Also, play "hidden object" in the general store. Ah, here we go - a hat that is also an umbrella that just happens to be necessary to occupy a mortician. What's this? A mini-game? Well at least we can press the 'skip' button. It's the wacky/sloppy "Anything goes" of adventure game writing. This is why the genre gets a bad rap.I hate to give this a thumbs down as I am sure a lot of work went into this game, but it all came down to "does this bring anything interesting to the genre?" Many reviews mention the writing as a positive - you may find it enthralling. I found that I'd much rather read a period novel.. This game sat in my Library as I waited for its continuation... which leads me to my negative review. Although I enjoyed what I played, I really can’t recommend this game until “Act 2” comes along. There were a lot of positives, including the atmosphere, humorous dialogue, a good story with fairly good characters, cool surreal dream sequences, and the Shove Ha'Penny mini-game that (I guess since it was tweaked) was a lot of fun. The negatives though outweighed all those for me. The control was very fiddly and picky, so you had to repeat a lot of actions/dialogue because you didn’t click the precise pixel. Also the timing of the arm wrestling was really irritating, much more than the ha’penny game. I could overlook all that but not the frustration of being left hanging without any resolution of the plot - especially since it’s a murder mystery! So as interesting as it was, it became just a pointless time-waster.. Really tidy game by a talented indie developer. Acts 2 and 3 are promised, really hope they can be released soon, and this will be expedited if gamers commit to buying the full season.PROS:- not too difficult, you shouldn't be getting stuck- still enough story/atmosphere to entertain more experienced gamers- nice, subtle humour- unpretentious, retro-style graphics- decent amount of game play, I imagine about 8-10 hours once all three acts are available, if you want to play thoroughly like a true point and click fan should!- simple game physics in which very little can go wrong bug-wise (I have only really seen one glitch)- just the right amount of dialogue- rich story based on one of the more fascinating mysteries in the real worldCONS:- okay, puzzles could be a bit more challenging- the graphics could be a shade better and still keep the retro feel- walking is a bit slow, when a double-click exit is unavailable and you have to scroll the screen- that f*cking shove ha'penny mini-game! At least you can skip it if you wish thoughThe cons were pure nit-picking, this game is awesome and deserves our support. Roll on Act 2 :). The mini-game was a bit frustrating, that was the main downside for me. Also experienced some very minor glitches, but nothing that stalled or ruined the game. The story is well developed and will hopefully develop even more in the following 'Acts'. The characters are wittily observed, interesting and mostly well rounded. The main character is clever and funny without verging too much into smugness or charicature; he's a relatable and well written protagonist. The soundtrack is also fitting and the graphics good.. This is a mixed bag. The story is well told, but not that original (there might be more orginality hidden behind the dream stuff, but this remains to be unveiled yet). The game itself it quite short (I've idled ingame), and the puzzles aren't really fun: some pixel hunting, some fetch-quests and some obtuse random stuff. The game feels unresponsive and clunky: the character walks quite slowly and has some pathfinding issues. Since he persists to walk to a hotspot when ever I want to try to apply an item there (just to tell me it won't work once he's arrived), solving puzzles feels sluggish and annoying sometimes. The graphics are okay but not really a joy to watch, especially not the mainchars moonwalking. They serve their purpose nevertheless. But, as said before, the narration is well done. For 8 € I'd expect more than a trailer ending with a cliffhanger, but nevertheless this game has much potential. Slightly recommanded in hope for a more polished second part.. Enjoyable playwritting I must praise, the protagnist has a strong character and a few other roles are impressive too. The story is developing well so far. Quizzes not very challenging but they are ok with me, it's the story that I care more about. If the developer want to make them more difficult, that's ok too. But I'm sure if the minigame be tear away the whole playing would become even more smooth and pleasing.Like some previous player commented, if you played some Wadjet eye games before and you liked them, this one is for you, because I am another living proof of that. Finally, I can see the cemetery is there and I was not given chances to exploit it, so I have reasons to believe Act II is already in development, thus I really wish it will come out soon.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAlT8sEGKhcIt’s a classic adventure game through and through, and I was initially stumped by a few of the puzzles I came across. For the frustrated, I can only offer the advice I’ve been given since my first Sierra game in the early nineties: click on everything, and pick everything that you can up.2016 is already starting out as a year for exciting games on the horizon, so you can imagine my surprise when a smaller indie adventure game like this one took my interest. I had a hell of a lot of fun playing The Slaughter, and look forward to its next episode.. The mini-game was a bit frustrating, that was the main downside for me.
